I spend so much time not being here.  I spend so much energy being where I have not been placed.

I am convinced that sometimes all God wants from us is for us to enjoy what we have, to do nothing else but take unashamed delight in the innumerable gifts He opens for us daily.  To pull your car to the side of the road and appreciate a sunset, to walk your dog along a shoreline, to eat berries right off the tree, to continue cultivating affection for those given to be near us.  How often do we grieve the heart of God by not being satisfied and not finding contentment in His things, His people?  How often do we cause all our own unease by desiring;
                   people who are not meant for us
;
                                              situations that are not ours;
     settings where we do not belong;
                                    things that are far from our reach for good reason
.
How often do we pray for blessings and answers only to ignore the response we already have?  Sometimes the best remedy for a restless heart is to get out of the house and walk until you find dirt roads, to step into the shallow waters of a river, to gaze upon an open field until it begins to look new. Until it seems as if the good Lord just invented and put together ladybugs or the colour green, until the sky begins looking infinite again.  We all have everything.  How fascinated would we be?  How content could we be?

I come to understand more and more the wisdom in Jesus’ urge for us to consider the birds and lilies, and in His knowing that we (his hurried, worried, moving, frantic children) would be in need of such a command.  Could we really find our rest in what the world tells us is trite and childish? Could we really find peace within all the beauty that God has created and sustained without the need of our hand?

Lord give us Grace to really be where you have placed us and to hold gratitude in uncertainty. Grace to shake off the same illusions that tell us we would be better off if we could just bite the apple.  Grace and Peace, Lord Jesus.
